Health Improvement Institute has established the following process to credential and select judges to evaluate applications for an Award:

• The Institute issues a call for judges
• Participants who are interested in judging Award applications complete a brief application form
• Members of the Judges Credentialing Committee (JCC) evaluate each application against established credentialing criteria , and determine which Award categories the applicant is qualified to judge. If the volume of applications warrants, the Institute forms subcommittees of JCC members to evaluate them.
• For each Award category, the Institute selects a panel of judges from among credentialed participants so that, to the maximum extent practical, members of the panel represent relevant diversity with respect to the research enterprise, including, for example, type of organization, role, professional background, and region of the country. If the volume of applications for an Award warrants, the Institute forms multiple judging panels.

Participants interested in selecting judges can apply to become a member of the Judges Credentialing Committee. They complete the same application as a prospective Award judge. Members of the Award Steering Committee (ASC) evaluate applicants' qualifications and experience and decides whether or not to recommend the participant as a member of the Judges Credentialing Committee. The Institute selects members from among applicants recommended by the Award Steering Committee. If a participant applies to be both a JCC member and judge, members of the Award Steering Committee simultaneously evaluate the applicant's qualifications and experience for both positions.
