The Institute identifies awards and ratings of Internet health information sites through the following processes:

• On-going Internet search to identify awards/rating meeting HIIQA criteria (principally using WWW search engines)
• Periodic requests to experts, associations, and other organizations to identify eligible awards/ratings
• Suggestions from consumers through the Institute's web site
• Requests from awards/ratings organizations to be assessed
• Serendipity (the chance discovery of an award or rating, for example, when reading a trade publication).
