Curriculum vitae: Dr. Barry F Brown holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Toronto. Dr. Brown chairs the Ethics Review Committee of Ethica Clinical Research Inc., a contract research organization focused on innovative clinical research solutions in drug development. He is also a member of various Canadian associations involved in research ethics. In 1992, Dr. Brown (with W.R.C. Harvey) edited the book Law and Public Policy for Bioethics: Canada and Ontario, which was re-edited in 1997.
Contribution/Impact: Dr. Brown taught bioethics for 30 years at St. Michaels College of the University of Toronto. Dr. Brown has contributed to the training of a substantial number of individuals in the protection of research subjects. For more than 20 years Dr. Brown was a volunteer reviewer for the Office of Research Administration of the University of Toronto. Dr. Brown has also contributed to the advancement of human subject protection through his writings and presentations at conferences.
Leadership: As chair of the ethics review committee, of Ethica Clinical Research, Inc, since 1996, Dr. Brown has ensured that the work of the committee has fulfilled the highest ethical standards.
Justification for award: Dr. Barry F. Brown has shown a life-long commitment to research ethics and has contributed towards ensuring the protection of human research subjects through his work.
