Annual Human Research Protection Award Recipients Announced
Bethesda, Maryland (January 31, 2005) Barbara F. Mishkin received the 2004 Life-time Achievement Award for Excellence in Human Research Protection. The 2004 Award winners were announced today by Dr. Peter G. Goldschmidt, President and Founder of the Health Improvement Institute. “We were delighted to have received applications of such high quality.”
Barbara F. Mishkin is a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Hogan & Hartson L.L.P. and a member of the firm's Health Group. She has thoughtfully and critically led the national dialog on research integrity and the protection of human participants in research for three decades. She has made several outstanding contributions to, and her activities have had a demonstrable impact on, advancing the protection of human subjects in research.
Dr. Robert J. Levine received an Award for Excellence in Human Research Protection for Lifetime Achievement. At Yale University, he served as Professor of Medicine, Chair of the Institutional Review Board, Director of the Law, Policy and Ethics Core of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS and Co-chair of the Executive Committee of the Yale Interdisciplinary Project in Bioethics. He was the founding Editor of “IRB: A Review of Human Subjects Research” and author of “Ethics and Regulation of Clinical Research”. Dr. Levine has effectively coordinated and contributed to a range of activities that have advanced thinking and practices leading to improved protection of human subjects in research.
Award for Excellence in Human Research Protection for Innovation
“There is excellent and ethical research being done throughout the United States and these awards celebrate the individuals and organizations who do it best”, said Dr. Peter Goldschmidt, President of the Health Improvement Institute. “This national award recognizes research institutions that have found innovative ways to improve the process of protecting people who volunteer to participate in research.
